Kayaking- A Day on the Bay
Kayaking is a special way to experience the Monterey Bay and its environs. Floating on the water in a single or two-person kayak, you can get "up close and personal" with the sea otters, harbor seals, sea lions and other inhabitants of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. And whether you're an expert or are interested in taking your first kayak lesson, Monterey offers an unparalleled experience for all levels.
Several local outfitters offer safety instruction and interpretive tours of the Monterey Bay and Elkhorn Slough led by marine biologists, which provide an insider's appreciation for the fragile ecosystems. They usually offer group or individual lessons, kayaking accessories, a place to change, and, often, a place to take a hot shower.
Don't forget to wear your sunscreen, and pack a waterproof camera to show your friends and family what an incredible experience you had playing on the bay.
Bicycling in Paradise
If you want to get to know what the Monterey locals love, trade in your car for a bike. With miles upon miles of bike lanes, waterfront trails and off-road tracks, you can go exactly where you want to go, while getting some exercise at the same time! Hop on the popular Recreation Trail, stretching 18 miles from Castroville to Pacific Grove. Along the way, you can stop for a bite to eat at Fisherman's Wharf, or visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium. On weekdays, bicyclists can enter Del Monte Forest free of charge. Considered one of the top 100 places to ride a bike in America, a cruise along 17-Mile Drive takes you by dozens of glamorous mansions and manicured golf courses of Pebble Beach. (Note: 17-Mile Drive is closed to bicyclists on weekends.)
Garland Park in Carmel Valley, and Toro Park in Salinas, offer mountain bikers hundreds of off-road options for tearing it up. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) also maintains miles of trails on the former Fort Ord Army Base, in and around Marina and Seaside. While it may not be as fast, getting around on two wheels is often easier than four. Whether you bring your own, or rent once you arrive, cruising around the county on two wheels offers a whole new perspective—plus, you'll enjoy your dessert all that much more!
What is a Surrey?
Surreys are four-wheeled, canopy-covered cycles which are perfect for friends and families who want to ride together. They are outfitted with a steering wheel and two sets of bicycle pedals, but you sit side-by-side in a surrey. Easy to handle, surreys are definitely the answer for families with small children who want to enjoy the waterfront area together. Two- and four-person surreys for use along the Recreation Trail can be rented at Adventures by the Sea and Bay Bikes on Cannery Row.
Shopping in Carmel by the Sea Carmel shopping is metropolitan style, though wholly unique in setting. It is also an all-day experience, and then some. The most discriminating shopper is sure to find something of great appeal in one of the town’s stone-paved alleyways or curlicue-roofed shops. From outdoor malls to family-owned boutiques, Carmel offers a shopping environment that wants for nothing but infinite time to explore it.
Monterey Movie and Literary Tours
Did you know that memorable scenes in nearly 200 movies have been filmed in Monterey County? Since 1897, the dramatic beauty of the Monterey Peninsula has attracted directors and cinematographers from around the world. Whether it is the pounding surf, the scenic splendor of 17-Mile Drive, or the hustle and bustle of the old Cannery Row days, filmmakers continue to find the perfect backdrops for key scenes in their movies.
See the beauty of the Monterey Peninsula through the eyes of Hollywood. Visit sites where movies were filmed and watch the actual scene on overhead monitors in a luxury tour coach. Daily and specialty scheduled group tours available.
Golf at the historic Del Monte Golf Course
With narrow, tree-lined fairways and small, well-protected greens, the Del Monte Golf Course has been challenging golfers for more than 100 years. Del Monte Golf Course is the oldest course in continuous operation west of the Mississippi. Spend the day out on the links and enjoy the beauty of Pebble Beach!
